Reflective Blog

Final Blog Reflection
Technology is serving and solving problems and is also a focused activity aimed at meeting needs and opportunities through the growth, development of products, systems (Smorti,1999).  Firstly, blogging for me was very hard as I didn’t know anything about it but my lecturer and friends supported me and I found it very interesting and challenging as well. After finishing my first blog I felt a lot more confident than before than I was nervous in the beginning.
The things I found very interesting in blogging were reading my classmates comments on my blogs and giving comments on their blogs. It is a very good way to know the weak points of our blogs as well good points. Posting every topic in the blogs gave me such a good experience and knowledge. Before starting this course I had no idea of what digital and non-digital technology was, but this experience was very meaningful to my knowledge on technology as I read my readings especially ‘Smorti’s reading. The course people, places, things and events helped me as an early childhood teacher to learn more about the uses of technology with children to foster their learning and development.
Technology is going to stay in this new era and for us as early childhood teacher’s to make sure that we use the technology in a way which enhances children’s overall developments. My first reflection was on I-Pad. It was very hard to get my head in this concept at starting but I was surprised to see that how children were using the new technology.  While using I-pad in the centre, I realized that it is a great resource to introduce to kids.
From Catherine’s comment I understood that we can use the I-pad not only for nursery rhymes but also for knowledge that they can use in future. It was also pointed out by   Ashly that children should be accompanied by their teacher’s while using the technology so they can actually learn some useful things. It is really very helpful and supportive when I read my friends’ comments as they made my blogging journey easier for future. Through such constructive feedback, we can share our feelings and knowledge that helps us in daily practice with kids. I really admired Rachel’s comment on my blog about celebrating Eid where she acknowledges my way of teching children the technological knowledge through the cooking activity. My blog on computers also showed us two sides of computer’s use.  It has advantages and disadvantages of computers they can learn good things as well bad thing for example, too much use of computer’s are bad for eyesight and health.  Mostly all of my friends agreed with me on this topic as it showed us the importance of technology in today’s life.  These types of conversations can really help us in professional growth. Penrose (2006) states that, “Adults need feedback on their learning feedback from the group members or tutor is necessary to foster the learning process constructive criticism and positive reinforcement from others helps to encourage adults to continue this process.”(p.122). In fact, I felt really satsfied about the overall comments given to my blog reflections. My group members also acknowledged my use of simple words and the links to literature on my blogs on technology. I strongly agree on the feedback given by my group members on my blog reflections that children should be provided with more opportunities of technology in the early childhood centres.
Providing children to use range of technology on children’s learning and development  will help children to gain knowledge of interaction with other peers; grow experience and understanding in problem solving of how the digital and non digital technologies can help them and others in this globalisation world.

Celebrating Eid

Celebrating Eid
Technology helps in every part of our lives and the daily activities are often somehow related to digital and non digital technology. My home centre is a multi cultural centre where we give respect to all culture existing in Aotearoa. Amidst Eid celebration, I decided to extend children’s interest in cooking as I have many the children in my room are interested in playing at the family corner using different utensil doing pretend cooking.
As Eid is celebrated by Muslims and cooking “sevian” and coconut sweets are a part of Eid celebration. “Cooking is a technological activity or system developed, used by early childhood teacher services to meet children’s need (Smorti,1999, p.6) .Then I involved a group of children in the cooking activity. As I set up the table with fry pan and serving spoon, the children start gathering around me and I invited them to join me in cooking sweets and  “sevian”.Although some children belonged to Fiji Muslim community so they know about their food items and join others, but other have no idea what is going on. We used different technological tools to increase for our cooking as a bowl, spoon, serving spoon, electric fry pan and cups.  Children helped me to arrange the packets of “sevian”, white sugar, milk bottles and measured water in the cup. I placed the electric fry pans and with the help of children put milk in pan with “sevian”.The children mixed white sugar to add taste. Then children received their technological understanding of working of electric appliance and how the heating mechanism works and how the water evaporates from food. Therefore the learning outcome of using technology was met by the provision of using tools, which enabled “children to recognize that different technologies may be used in various places and setting” (Ministry of Education,1996, p.25).
Lastly, children made the “sevian, as long as the basic technological tools and the equipment are available. “Technology is influenced by the culture or the society in which it occur” (Smorti, 1999,p.6). By celebrating different cultural events in the centre, we are acknowledging and recognizing the different cultures that the children and their families come from. To build on this teachable moment, each child in the centre was given a receipe copy to take home. These “sevian” would make a great special for children’s families/whānau for the Muslims culture as part of Eid celebration. We all enjoyed eating the “sevian” with everybody at the centre.

To conclude, this non-digital technology of cooking with children enhance their understanding of some typical science concept which are really useful and present in our everyday lives and these scientific contribute in the children healthier growth and better understanding of their natural surroundings.

Computers

Computers

Our centre has our own children’s computer.  Children love this as they used it for games as in counting, colours and other young children’s games.  The computer keypad is designed for young children as it has got well defined alphabets and numbers printed on it so that the children can easily recognize the different alphabets and numbers, hence, it will make it easier for them when they press the buttons.  The computers can be accessed by children of age 3 to 5 years between 10:00a.m to 11:00a.m. Every child’s learning is facilitated and scaffold by qualified teachers who can help to develop children’s technological understanding. “A teacher’s computer proficiency can have a direct impact on how effectively children’s learning needs are met through technology” (Tsantis, Bewick, Thouvenelle, 2003, p.4). The outcome of this has been recorded in the social development of children as they are learning to take turns and negotiate their times wisely so that they all participate in technology activity. Another add-on which has been contributing to these children’s holistic development is their understanding of art skills as these children are seen to be quiet interested in paint brushes on the computer in order to paint their pictures instead of using the crayons or colouring pens to draw their pictures which is a fun activity for them. Hence, these children are gaining knowledge of technological instruments to help them in their play and their daily creative ventures. “Children gain experience in using communication technologies such as crayons, paint brushes, pencils, calculators, books and computers” (Ministry of Education,1996,p.97).

As children are naturally attracted to computers and thus, it becomes a fun filled way for them to learn their colours, and gaining the knowledge of what they wanted to achieve. “Through the technological Knowledge strand, students develop knowledge particular to technological enterprises and environments and understandings of how and why things work” (Ministry of Education, 2007, p.32). For examples, games provided on the computer supported them in learning to gain skills about time keeping and controlling the mouse to get to places they think is right for them.

The one disadvantage is using computer daily is that it can affect the eyesight of these children in their early years, which can have lifelong affects on their well being and health.  For example, some children are glued to the computer and not want to play outside exploring the water, sand and other activities setting by the teachers. It is also affecting physical skills of how to use their body for balancing and thinking logically for problem solving on their own.

Furthermore, I believe that computers are somehow quite beneficial for the children as they serve as a faster way of learning, but it’s not helping them at all to communicate verbally where they can helped to extend their language and understanding about their peers. “It is the teacher’s knowledge and skills about how to use the technology that makes the difference, not the technology itself” (Tsantis, Bewick, Thouvenelle, 2003, p.4). Hence, the non digital technology can be helpful in improving children’s cognitive skills but the children face major challenges related to their physical development and well being.

IPad & Cellphones

Technology is a vital tool which enables the children to learn about the new things which contributes in their overall learning.  Today, we had mat when one of our parents turned up with a box of Ipads and cell phones for the children. They looked real but they were all toy ipads and cellphones as it was donated to us by vodafone.

When they were given the Ipads & cell phones, they were quite excited as they started to communicate with each other using them.  I was quite surprised when I noticed the children trying to use the keys to do their text.  The next day I took my ipad to the centre and then I showed them my ipad as I played you tube of the nursery rhymes for the children to watch at the mat time. “By offering a variety of contexts, teachers help their student to recognise links and develop generic understandings” (Ministry of Education, 2007, p.32). Children were showing their interest in watching the nursery rhymes and were responding by singing along with the song. “Teachers should be sensitively attuned to children’s abilities, interest and strengths, and remain accessible enough to provide appropriate scaffolding” (Smith, 1996 as citied McNaughton &Williams, 2008, p.370).  I as a teacher scaffold the children learning in the area by giving them the opportunity to explore through introducing the ipad in the mat time at my home centre.

K said, “Teacher my mummy has got one ipad like you?” “Is that right”?  I added.  “Yeah, it’s got all the photos of my sister and my dad”. “She added”.  May be we could ask mum to bring in your ipad so we can have a look at your family”.  “Ok” she replied, as we continued looking at the nursery rhymes at the mat time.

“Using many materials for different purposes enables children to recognise that different technologies may be used in various places and settings” (Ministry of Education, 1996, p. 95).  Fake phones and Ipads allow the children to experience technology as a pretending way of socialisation, but giving them the real ones supported what they need to know about technology and it can be included in their families.  For example, playing the nursery rhymes at mat times through ipads helps showing the children how technology works. Children were able to learn and understand how technology is used as part of their communication and how to use them by using their fingers to pretend when to text other people.  The children were also able to explore gross motor skills through using the key pad of the Ipads and cell phones.  This enhanced the children to get the understanding of the new technology and how it’s going to affect as part of their learning in the future.

“Technology is different from science, in that it emphasis creative and productive aspects of solving problems and answer questions” (Smorti ,1999,p.6). I believe ipads and cell phones are a great tool for socialisation and gives them the opportunities to learn about science and maths and how it’s related to our every day living. Advantage downloads education app for young children to develop their literacy skills. The disadvantages of these new technologies could be not allowing the children to use their own brain for problem solving. It can also put their health at risk due to radiation. For example, the children were not able to recognise numbers as they learn at school but now it’s about pressing the button and it’s done for them.

Lastly, I would like to say that the new technology is good and it is as likely for us as a early childhood  teacher how we use it, and the way we use and the reason behind this digital device technology and in a way that would be helpful for the children in my our centre.
